Does the probiotic pills, its contents being dessicated and contained only limited quantity per pill provide the same benefits compared to the bacteria found in cultured foods?
Compared with cultured foods like yogurt, probiotic supplements offer both advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, they are usually more potent and may contain specific bacterial strains that you might not find in foods.
On the negative side, they are more expensive and somewhat unreliable. Consumer watchdogs have repeatedly busted companies for selling products that were either contaminated with “unauthorized” strains of bacteria or did not contain anywhere near the number of live and active bacteria promised on the label.
In popular opinion, it seems not to make sense to take probiotic supplements on an ongoing basis, unlike vitamins. For general health and well-being, it is recommended to take probiotic foods like yogurt, kefir, fresh sauerkraut and kimchi a regular part of your diet.
Having said that, probiotic supplements can be helpful for specific medical situations, such as preventing or treating traveler’s diarrhea or following intensive antibiotic therapy, but it’s a good idea to ask a healthcare professional for a recommendation for a trusted brand.
However, knowing human habits and frailty, the convenience afforded by the pill form as compared to culturing one's own fermented food; coupled with our reluctance to sacrifice our modern lifestyle, in my humble opinion, they will still be the order of the day.
In summary, pills and capsules still provide the best of all storage capability in terms of ease of carrying and in terms of cost derived from economy of scale production.
With mechanization of packing with machines, the pill form will finally become cheaper when there is volume. And they are easily stored and kept for longer lasting period of storage in airtight or even vacuum packed bottles.
That is why the pill will never go out of date!
